Colin Hawes:

  • For a number of years, staff took 60 of the second year (by now called year 8) plus about 12 sixth formers to the Lake District for a week after examinations, where we camped at Lathkill Dale.

  • The sixth formers were there to set off on their Gold D of E expedition. The 60 younger boys were divided into 6 groups of 10, and the staff took on a rotation of the 6 groups for various activities.

  • My role was to take the groups canoeing on Derwent Water and do a half-day practical outdoors learning about the Lake District environment and local history.

  • The second-year sixth form left in the Summer of 1985, which is when the school was informed it was going to close in 1990; year after year the school then lost the oldest year group.

  • We switched from going to the Lake District to the Peak District for change. Other activities included rock-climbing and cycling The Tissington Trail.
