This whaler photo is from Summer 1961. On our non-games afternoons we went with Stan Goetzee on the Orwell with the recently rendered-seaworthy whaler. At first we 'pulled' it  - the correct term for rowing a boat on one oar each with fixed seats (thwarts) and toes hooked under straps to give extra leverage.

We eventually entered a competition against the sea cadets (as sea cadets) and wiped the floor (river bed) with them all.  This caused a few of us to be drafted in as the Eastern Area RNSA 14' boat team. We won the region (in Birmingham on the reservoir) and then the Nationals in Portsmouth Harbour.

This is the 1st iteration of the squad.

Chris Snuggs: "I think massive congratulations are in order! Great initiative, effort and skill! And a lovely memory of Stan Goatzee."
