Rugby Match Statistics Database

I have entered into a database the results of ALL rugby matches played from 1950 to 1977 except as shown below. From this database it is possible to publish almost any conceivable statistic, and I have made a start as shown below. Unless indicated, these stats do not include matches played against CLUBS.
prior to 1952, only season stats were
recorded, not individual matches
The 1959 Spring "Janus" is missing
"Janus" died at the end of 1977

The ONLY 1st XV LOSSES at HOME
When I attended Derek Thornbery's 80th birthday party he introduced me to Jim Cottrell, saying that he had never lost a rugby match he had played in at WHS - which is an astonishing statistic. I am sure Doc knew what he was talking about, but thought it would be interesting to see what the records say. Of course, I have no means of knowing whether Jim was even playing in the matches in which his year's team lost. If Derek was right, then he can't have been! No matter; the results for those teams are amazing anyway, and maybe those losses were BECAUSE he wasn't playing!

From Jerry Page's "WHS History of Rugby" : "1967/68: The following season saw the 1st XV lose two games. William Ellis gained revenge for their defeat the previous year although, a little cheekily, some six of their players from the previous year, who had left the school, came back to try and ensure victory. The reason we found out is because the mother of two Woolverstonians was a member of staff at William Ellis and tipped us the wink!"

Logically, this means that the loss to William Ellis in 1967 to 1968
should be discounted, which will improve even further these stats!
