| Under 13s v Holbrook TOP
A good game in which nearly everyone played very well. The comments which the Holbrook masters made on the touchline and after the game (both today and last Saturday) would have made you blush with pride. As far as I could see from the edge of the field, the best performances were by Alexander, whose dribbling, taking advantage of an opponent’s mistake, general following up of the loose ball, and defence work were all first class; Whittaker, who was the first person to outhook the Holbrook hooker in seven (or was it nine?) matches to get the ball so often when our scrum was losing the shove in nearly every scrum was no small achievement; King, who covered in defence, followed up, and joined in the movements well; Waughman, Suffling and Miles, all of whom cut through, passed and backed up splendidly. Waughman was inclined (as often in the past) to hold onto the ball too long and thus either get tackled by the forwards or give his centres no chance of developing a movement. In the second half he was much better in this respect and the try we scored was as good as any this term. Hudson also played one of his better games at full back. He positioned himself well and fielded the ball cleanly and calmly. O’Leary gave a good service to Waughman, allowing the latter to run into the pass, and also caught some difficult passes from the lineout. Dibbin marked his scrum half well and was unlucky to be given offside on some occasions. His decision sometimes to take a lineout instead of a scrum was a sound one I think as at one point it was important that the forwards be rested at the risk of not getting the ball. Once the scrum is exhausted one has lost the game. The weaknesses or faults which cost us victory were 1) our slowness in getting the ball out of the scrum once it had been hooked (very difficult to do when being shoved backwards and 2) the failure of the wings to back up Miles and Suffling. This was not surprising as Adams has not played on the wing before - and he was thus often out of position - and this was also Nash’s first match. But the result was that a centre was often left out in front on his own searching for someone to give the ball to. There being noone about he was finally tackled with the ball and more than once held onto it in the hope that someone would arrive in support. This is natural, but illegal. There was one penalty which we had at the end of the game when we were in their half, which Suffling kicked into touch when the short kick would have been better. To have given our outsides the ball would have been much more frightening to Holbrook than to have given them a throw-in. Cooper B., Webb and Burr were useful in the lineout as usual and Croft did at least one of his speciality interceptions. This has in a way been a frustrating season: so often we have had the greater part of the play without being able to force a win, and so seldom have we had our full team. But the standard of rugger has been high and the spirit in which it has been played - not only in the team but in the whole of the A group - has been admirable. Well done and thank you. |
