Chris Snuggs: "I looked up Normanton School; they must have been bloody good to beat you lot. That school like ours no longer exists ...... swept away by the Comprehensive tsunami of the time ....."
Jim Hayter: "This might sound like sour grapes, but they targeted Sean Kelleher every opportunity they got and I think as a result Sean didn't finish the game: had to be substituted. We were a little shell-shocked as we hadn't played against such a physical team before in a Sevens competition."
Chris Snuggs: "I had a feeling something stank - and not sour grapes at all. Some boys didn't get on with Taffy, but he would NEVER have proposed or condoned any unfair play. It might not even have occurred t him to WARN you about it so that you were more prepared to deal with it. Any sportsman could not enjoy a victory gained through unfair play.
Unfairly targeting an individual outside the norms of play is sick. I recall that happening to Pele in the World Cup - 66 was it?"
Phil Anthistle: “Just as a little bit of payback for you, the 77-78 1st XV team played Normanton when we were on tour and we beat them. They were a good side, just not good enough!!"
Jim Hayter: "Good news!"
Chris Snuggs: "Revenge is sweet, even after half a century or so! And that must have been a huge adventure for you, despite losing in the final." |
