Irish Guardsman promoted to Captain December 1912. Killed in action shortly after the Battle of Mons in WW1.
Attacking the ridge beyond Soupir at Soupir Le Cour Farm - 1, 2 & 3 companies moved to assist 3rd Coldstreams
who were being outflanked, and advanced up the hill to within 200 yards of the northern edge of the wood.
It was here that Captain Guthrie was wounded and Captain Berners was killed by rifle fire.

Hamilton Hugh Berners was the owner of Jock the dog,
who is buried at the bottom of Orwell Side.
