Brian Workman was one of the original intake and a shining star of those pioneering and golden 50s. Apart from anything else, in 56-57 he was Head Boy and Captain of both Rugby & Cricket, a unique feat I believe. He particularly excelled at cricket and played for Suffolk while still at school.*

He was held in great esteem by peers and staff alike. In later years he moved to Australia, where he passed away on Monday 4 October 2021. By all accounts nobody who ever met him is likely to forget his humility and other human qualities.

Here he is on the left in the school photo of 1956-1957, with another star of the era, Ian McCulloch.

OBITUARY: Peninsular Bridge Club, NSW Australia

*Peter Sadler reminds me that he was ONLY 17 and in the Lower VIth at the time!

Ian Suter - Halls 53-60:
"I have been in touch with Brian Workman over the past few years and I believe that he passed away in Australia some months ago as he had terminal skin cancer when we last communicated, since when all contact from him has ceased. He was Head Boy sometime around 1954 or 1955 and was outstanding in all forms of sport and also academically gifted."

Glynne Thomas - Halls 57-62: "I was very sad to hear the news about Brian, a man to be both admired and respected."

David Lewis - Halls 55-60: "Also extremely sad to hear the news about Brian. Had the honour of playing cricket with him many times. He was not only a gifted sportsman but one of the nicest, genuine people you could ever meet."

John Tuddenham - Hansons 52-57: "Brian Workman was always there, while I was at WH (52-57) He was smart, friendly, unassuming, a good cricketer, ran under 5 minutes for the mile one year ... was a nice guy. And a "no fuss" senior ... never any problems with him ... I'm really sorry to hear he has left us ... too soon."

Roger Friend - Johnstons 58-63: "I met Brian at a social evening at the Civil Defence HQ in Fulham in about 1964, not long after I left school. I remember him as a gentleman and an extremely likeable man. I later corresponded with him during the 80s/90s when he was living in Cumbria and also met him at the school. I was sorry to learn that he passed away."
