Kyriacos Tsaparelli writes: When I heard that Derek was celebrating his 80th birthday, I wanted to give him  an extra sparkle. It started with a pen and paper, and I put together all the elements that I remember of Derek which were then transferred on to a cake made by my sister. This included images printed on icing paper in edible dyes. The sheet music on the piano was Badimerie - Suite number 2 in b minor (for the flute). There were the instruments that he played, piano, cello and flute. On the floor was the LP cover of Holst's "The Planets". This was symbolic because when we were ready to go and play a house match he used to play us "Mars" - extremely loud - to give us fire and passion to go and win the match!

He would take us on field trips to Constable country in Flatford where he gave us canvas and oil paints (OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET) to go and be creative - hence the images on the pictures ... the Haywain and Mill on the Floss. There are also pictures on Norwich Cathedral and of course Woolverstone Hall.

There are the images of the sports he encouraged and I have included a Bombay Ball which Orwell seemed to win every year. There is even a little shield on the cake onto which we put the school badge. The books were English books ... "Romeo & Juliet", "Julius Caesar", Chaucer .... We also included "Dr Who" and "Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

Thank you to my Sister!
and Thank you, Derek!
