The 2024 WHS Reunion Weekend

On Saturday 17th August we assembled once again at Woolverstone Hall by kind invitation of IHS. It was a busy day, and immense thanks go to Joe-Joe Ogugua who initiated and organized the whole thing - with help for Rosa's tribute from the Ipswich Windrush Society, who provided a Windrush display in the main hall.

  • Assembling at 12:00, we took part in a tree-planting tribute ceremony to Rosa Weekes, whose tree now stands proudly not far from that of Derek Thornbery, with whom she worked for so long in Orwell House.
  • Then followed the cricket match against the formidable IHS XI. The match was played in good spirit, with immense skill, in pleasant conditions and on a pitch worthy of Dickie Mayes. I for one can never walk on that field without thinking of him.
  • The day was completed with a magnificent BBQ behind the orangerie, with a disco to follow.

On Sunday 18th August some WHS Old Boys, Masters and current IHS staff met up for a four-hour cruise on the Orwell. The weather looked a bit iffy at the beginning but brightened up very pleasantly by the time we set off, being neither too hot nor windy. The TOPSAIL CHARTERS crew could not have been nicer and we avoided any mishaps on or to the barge. As can be seen from the photos, cruisers looked relaxed and contented as animated conversations took place on deck. Some of us had not met for 60 years. Others whose names I know very well from archive work and social media had never met, so there was a lot to catch up on. A particular double pleasure was to have former masters Colin Hawes and Keith Farley-Pettmann with us along with some IHS staff.

As usual, we cruised down some way past Pin Mill to have a distant view of Felixtowe Docks and then turned back. A particular thrill as ever was to see the school from the river.

Many thanks both to TOPSAIL and to all participants for their good-humoured company. PHOTOS & MATCH REPORT
