Some personal reflections by Chris Snuggs:
- It is always emotional coming back to Woolverstone Hall. These were for most of us (certainly for me) dramatic days, and also sometimes magnificent but occasionally traumatic ones. I always feel that I am somehow coming home when I return.
- I have been back about 6 times since 2,000 and always met with extraordinary kindness by any IHS staff I have bumped into.
- I was trying to do three things on this day:
-
meet old friends and acquaintances, some of whom I had not seen or heard of or from for over 5 decades
- meet OBs whose names I knew from social media and "Janus" but whom I had never met
- make a photographic record of the day
- As usual when one is multi-tasking it is difficult to do each task well, but "it is what it is" as we now say. What was the equivalent in the middle of the 20th century when I was at WHS?
- Everyone I talked to was extremely friendly. However, I now feel that I could and should have chatted longer to some of my peers from those days, but somehow it all got a bit rushed at times.
- I met in particular Barry Clark, Roger Friend, Terry Ashcroft, Mike Wardell, Hugh Hawkins, & Richard Cyster, but did not spend long enough with them.
- The same with my absolute hero Barry Salmon, but it seems that he really enjoyed the day nevertheless!
- I was somewhat disappointed not to meet more chums from those days: Terry Stancliffe, Bryan Weaver, Cedric Delves, Peter Rose, Michael Clarke, William Bauer, Adil Cowan, Ron Scarpello, Jean van Vliet and others. Apart from Terry a few years ago, I have never heard of or seen any of those since school days, not even on social media.
- I did meet personally for the first time the inimitable Mark Frost and Danny O'Byrne - and for the severalth time Harvissimo Angel - which was a highlight of the day!
- I learned after it was all over that there were OBs there who I would like to have met but somehow missed on the day, Unfortunately, we did not have a list of whom to look out for.
- I was half-expecting to meet some IHS 'Old' Girls there, but was disappointed! There are a few who were involved in my dramatic, magnificent and traumatic days referred to above! But perhaps certain sleeping dogs are best left to lie!
- We also didn't end up with a group photo. I tried in advance of the day to suggest ways of organizing that, but failed to inspire enough people to get it done - and I didn't want to push it on the day.
- I was chuffed to meet Martin Offiah, though I was only able to interrupt his dinner, shake his hand and congratulate him on his awesome career. I forgot (one always forgets something ...) to thank him for his wonderful article on Doc Thornbery where he expressed his gratitude for what Doc and the school had done for him.
- I was mildly disappointed - but not really surprised - not to meet more WHS legends: Nigel Fletcher, Khalid Rashid, Chris Webb, any of the Burghley Boys (Suffling, Dibbin, Waughman and O'Leary!), Jim Cottrell, Phil Davies, Dave Waight, Sean Kelleher, Adrian Thompson, Thomas Newsham, Glynne Thomas and others! But we are all knocking on now and it is not so easy to travel long distances.
- I DID meet Chris Hopkirk, but somehow failed to get a decent photo of him.
- I was thinking a lot for much of the day about Dick Woollett, whom I knew very well in this first job at WHS but not as Head. He wasn't able to make it on the day, and was really missed.
Like days of yore, last Saturday now seems a bit like a dream, but the photos are there to remind us that it really did happen! Thank you to all those present and especially to those who made it happen and organized the programme.
