Some Facebook comments on what was probably
the finest rugby team that WHS ever produced. (CS)
Pass for National Schools 7’s,
where we lost in semifinals 7-6
to eventual winners St Edwards, Liverpool. Dodgy penalty for crossing. After the
game Nigel Starmer-Smith told us
that he didn’t think it was a penalty.
A very muddy pitch also went
against our very quick squad
.

John Morris Team Report on the Season

Chris Hopkirk: “I remember the pitch well, and sad to say the penalty against me for obstruction. Very dubious. Always liked Starmer-Smith.”

Chris Snuggs: “Sounds like extremely bad luck you didn't deserve.”

Chris Hopkirk: “Yes, it was. We had a great 7s team. Coming 3rd or 4th in that competition was still a significant result."

Chris Snuggs: “Probably the best at that level in the history of the school. Fate often plays a malicious hand in such things.”

Chris Hopkirk: “Indeed. Good memories though. In fact some of the best.”

Simon Jones: “We lost in the semi-final at Oxford that year as well.”

Chris Hopkirk: “Yes we did, didn’t we?”

Philip Flannery: “To the same team, who also won Oxford and had two future England caps, Kevin Simms and Peter Buckton. Remember one game at Oxford 7s where Colin O’Garro was tearing the opposition apart. They noticed Colin was wearing a ring, that he couldn’t easily remove. Our sub had to come on - Adrian Thompson! He tore them up as well.”

Simon Jones: “I think it was St Edwards, Liverpool. I seem to remember they were big buggers. We didn't have Adrian at Oxford. I seem to remember he was on some international duty. I think it was fencing - not 100% sure. He returned for Rosslyn Park.”

Simon Jones: “Do you remember your injury against West Park on tour?”

Richard Stokes: “That West Park match was amazing.”

Simon Jones: “It was. Big crowd totally against us and Cedric scoring a wonder try. I was supporting him like and good back row and watched in amazement. With hardly any space towards the touchline and all attempted tackles just bouncing off him. The look on the crowd's face as he jogged back past them after scoring classic. I think West Park had a couple of England players at the time. One at prop I think.”

Philip Flannery: “I didn’t go on the West Park tour. I thought Thommo was at Oxford, but we tried not to use him because he had a hip injury (hit by a business Ipswich?), and wanted to be ready for England.”

Chris Hopkirk: “Good memories lads. What was the stand-out game for you guys? For me it was our win against Campion.”

Philip Flannery: “I remember being in a changing room at Roslyn Park; we shared it with a team from Northern Ireland (Methodist College?). They were discussing the draw, and said how they would be playing their rivals from Belfast in the next round. The rivals played us in the upcoming match. We duly met Methodist College. It was with great pleasure that their arrogance was removed.”

Philip Flannery: “Also, Cyril chasing down the English Schools 200m champion against London Oratory to save the game.”

Chris Hopkirk: “Nice memory.”

Richard Stokes: “My fav moment of that season was Cedric and I tackling Mark Hudson at the same time and sending him flying into touch v Ipswich school.”

Simon Jones: “That was a tough game!”
