"THE UTOPIAN JAZZ CLUB" - winter 1961

In the last term the official school jazz club has extended its activities "N"-fold. Gathering strength with subscriptions the membership totals have practically reached the coveted one hundred mark. All praise to our avid supporters.

The highlight of the last term's activities was the cutting of the U.J.T.'s first long-playing record for Decca. The trio would like to pay their tribute and thanks to Benjamin Britten for the arrangements and to Norman Del Mar and Merlin Channon for training the accompanying orchestra to the standard of perfection required. All members who desire the disc (general release in November) at a special U.J.C. reduced rate should contact the club Chairman.

The trio also performed in public, notably in concerts organised for entertainment.

We welcomed to the ranks of patrons (previously Mr. P. Hutton, M.A., Toastmaster, Mr. M. Channon, B.Mus., Musical Adviser, and Miss E. Johnston, Fashion Adviser) Mr. J. Hédon, French Liaison Bureau, and Mr. J. Blades, Acoustics Adviser.

Valete. Frank Stone. Trios: flute, drums, string bass, vocals, arranger and composer. It is probably he who did most to bring the trio to the standard it reached. A musician of great accompaniment and swing.

Jack Lonergan. Trios: trombone, trumpet, french horn, drums, string bass, vocals, arranger and composer. His swinging trombone did most to make the trio heard. The greatest "traditional" influence on the trio.

Brooks Linklater. Trios : saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, flute, french horn, piano, timpani, drums, string bass, vocals, arranger and composer. Although a "modern" influenced musician, his rhythmic intuition was perfect at all times. Probably the shyest and most intellectual of the group, he was most confident when instigating.

We wish them well!
