AFTER 1977 is a DARK ZONE!
The Story of Hansons House as told in "Janus"
1) I thought of putting a general introduction here. I could have a go myself, but it is better done by a Hansonite ........ Any offers to me.
Multiple offers can ALL be put in - subject to editorial control! A different opinion from each era also makes sense of course.

2) I had hoped to add a definitive list of staff and captains, and have put in the names where I can. However, it is impossible to be sure about the staff, particularly the Assistant Housemasters & Matrons - and the names of most Sports Captains remain to be added by someone. As for House Captains, I have assumed that the authors of the House Reports were the House Captains - but I could be wrong of course ....

Although the last of the Nissen huts, which had been our homes for many years, was only demolished this term, all memories of life in them were left far behind as we progressed throughout the year. The new building had its small problems but the House soon settled down to enjoy the benefits of community life. Once again Corner's beat us by a few points to win the Athletics Cup, but our juniors combined very well as a team to win their age, group, especially since they had only one individual winner.

Markham, Stirling, Golebiowski, Driver, Goody, Banwell and Dickinson represented the School at athletics at either, Woodbridge, H..M.S. Ganges or the County Championships at Leiston. We were not so successful in the other later-House Competitions but we were by no means disgraced. By the end of the Rugby season Brobbel and Blake had ensured regular places in the First XV and many of our boys played for the School teams. Cracknell and Stirling ran in the Suffolk A.A.A. Cross-Country Championships which were held at the School during the Easter Term.

At cricket we were represented in the First XI by Markham, Blake and Brobbel who was awarded his colours, and special congratulations are also due to those members of the House who reached the ill-fated Third XI. Whilst the outstanding activity in the House has been model-making, for which we have a well-equipped hobbies-room, many of our boys have been to the fore in other School activities. The House was well represented in the Choral and Orchestral Societies' Concerts on Open Day, and Abrams and Wolmark played in the Aldburgh Festival. We also possess a large constituent of the Young Farmers' Club who are always active - feeding pigs! Alex Johnston was appointed a School Blue during the year to bring our number of School Officers to four.

Academically the House continues to enjoy moderate success and on Speech Day, M. Jefferies, Coles, Wolmark, P. Jefferies, Thomas, Smith and Loye all received prizes. Again a number of boys are leaving this year to enter the Universities. M. Jefferies and M. Cracknell have provisional places at King's College. London University, and Bristol University respectively. Alex Johnston is hoping to take a sandwich course at Rolls Royce, Ltd., and L. Markham is joining Northants' C.C.C. The whole House wishes them, together with Wells, Hassett, Brookes and Webb, the best of luck in their careers. The House will be left without any Prefects or Blues, for the first time ever, at the end of this year, but I'm sure our Sixth Form will prove as helpful, and efficient in running the House as their predecessors.

THE PAST YEAR ended on a very pleasant note with the knowledge that at last we were leaving the old Nissen huts and that next year the House would be starting out on a new venture. With the whole House now together in one building we hope that the community spirit will develop to an even greater extent in the future.

We were very sorry, however, that D. Begg. M. Brown and A. Kuptz were unable to enjoy the comfort of the new house after being with us for so long. We are proud to have three members of the House among the first of the School to enter the Universities. Begg is studying mathematics at Edinburgh University, Brown is taking a course in town planning at Durham University, and Kuptz is studying social sciences at Keele College, North Staffs. The whole House wishes them, together with J. Byford, Campling, Stanton, Fraser-Srnith, Mantell and Lister, the best of luck in their careers.

After winning the Athletics Cup for four years running we finally lost it by a few points to Corner's, whom we heartily congratulate and thank for such an exciting contest. Once again Stirling won both his races and the team spirit was accentuated when our Juniors, quite unexpectedly won the 4 x 110 yards relay. D. Begg, Markham, Stirling, Golebiowski and Blake represented the School at H.M.S. Ganges but unfortunately were unable to compete in the County Championships at Newmarket.

Our performances at rugby and cross-country were rather disappointing and the House cannot afford to depend on just a few individuals. Special congratulations go to D. Begg, who was placed fourth in the Youths' race at the Suffolk A.A.A. Cross-Country Championships. We still continue to put up a good fight in the House cricket matches and were represented in the First XI by Tuddenham, Blake and Markham, who was awarded his colours. We have some very promising individuals in the sphere of sport and provided we work hard as a team the House can he sure of success in the future.

Academically, the House continues to enjoy moderate success, and on Speech Day D. Begg, Dye, Kohler and J. Coles all received prizes. Five Fifth Formers and seven Fourth Formers, who did extremely well in the G.C.E. examinations, joined the Sixth Form this term.

The House is as musical as ever, and while M. Brown and Weinberg are to be congratulated on some excellent singing in "The.Mikado," we must not forget Banwell, our representative in the very successful School Jazz Group. The appearance of a wash-board to join his guitar shows that his musical taste is exerting some influence in the House, although the merits of "Skiffle" are somewhat controversial.

M. P. Cracknell and M. Jeffries were appointed School Blues and A. Johnston has been made a House Monitor.

R. P. Bailey tried to race the coaches to school on his motor-powered bicycle at the beginning of the term, and although he did not quite make it, he continues to break the speed limit around the school, and intends making another attempt on the home run at Christmas.

We wish him the best of luck.

THE PAST YEAR has been one of mixed success for the House: having tasted the bitterness of defeat in Inter-House Rugby, our teams hit back to carry off both the Athletic and Cricket trophies in a most convincing manner.

The athletic team, under its captain, A. J. George, won both the senior and junior 4 x 110 yards relays, whilst individual events were won by A. J. George, M. H. Brown, Byrde, Smith, Stirling and Golebiowski. The best performances of the day as far as the House was concerned, were by Golebiowski, who scored maximum points in his three events, and by Stirling, who scored maximum points in his two. A. J. George, M. H. Brown, Kuptz, Smith, Dawson, Byrde. Mantell, Golebiowski and Stirling represented either the School at H.M.S. Ganges, or East Suffolk (South) in the County Championships held during the season.

With captain Byrde forcing the pace, our cricket team had remarkable success; the batting strength of Byrde, Smith and Markham. combined with the bowling of Byrde and McMaster, carried all before them, enabling the team to win two and draw the other of its three matches. We were well represented in School cricket, where Byrde and Smith won their School Colours, and Markham was the regular 1st XI wicketkeeper. A. J. George, Tuddenham, Brobbel, Blake, Weinberg, Banwell, Goody, Bissett and Walker all played for their various School teams.

In the annual cross-country race we provided the junior winner. Stirling, and three of our senior boys gained places in the first five of the senior team race. In fact. our senior team won their event, but owing to the fact that our juniors enjoyed only moderate success, the trophy went to Halls House for the first time, and they are to be warmly congratulated. M. H. Brown, Byrde and McMaster were chosen to compete in the Suffolk cross-country championships. and Ronan and Cracknell were reserves for this event.

Our Rugger team was not up to its usual strength this year, having lost its main inspiration last summer, but we did not disgrace ourselves in any way. Many of the House played for the various School teams.

If one can judge by the number of House members in the Choral Society we seem to be becoming quite a musical House. At the Christmas and Easter presentations by the Society, M. H. Brown, Abrams and Mann took solo parts, whilst many more gHansonites" were stalwarts in the chorus. At the Christmas concert Kohler entertained the School on his trumpet during the interval preceding our "House effort" Abrams, adept in both violin and piano, recently obtained a distinction mark in an examination for piano held by the Royal Associated Schools of Music.

Kuptz and Cracknell each had a part in the School's production of "The Devil's Disciple", but the House's main contribution was back-stage, where A. J. George, in the role of stage manager, kept a firm hand on affairs. Ronan, Smith, Moxham and McMaster prepared the set and were responsible for making most of the "props"

Academic success continues to be on a high level, and on Speech Day we saw Dye, Stirling, Kohler, Cullen and Coles go up to receive their prizes from Mr. John Hare, MP, Williams, A., and Goody are eagerly awaiting Junior Speech Day, when they too will receive their reward for hard work during the past year.

At the beginning of the Summer Term A. J. George and M. H. Brown were appointed School Blues, much to the pleasure of the whole House.

Ronan, Cracknell and Moxham rounded off a year's hard work by spending some considerable time working on the maze, and made it look quite attractive by the time Speech Day arrived. In doing this they gained the respect of many frigid souls.

Having seen our Fifth Form of last year for perhaps the last time, it still remains for us to congratulate them on their G.C.E. examination results, especially McMaster, who passed in seven subjects; and wish them good luck for their future in the wide world.

DURING THE past year we have experienced many changes. Despite the unsettling effect these might have had on the general atmosphere and tone of the House, we may well be proud of our achievements.

Much could be said of the ways in which many boys have used their leisure time. Some have made full use of the various activities, clubs and societies in the school, and many have surprised themselves with the successful results of their first attempts in new activities. These boys have set a shining example to that all minority who might well read with profit Kipling's cure for Cameelious Hump. In games and athletics many have revealed latent talents at their first tentative efforts. All credit to them and to their prompting and encouraging supporters, whose enthusiasm has been a great inspiration and who have been responsible in he main for our continued success in the inter-House championships.

In a terrific battle with Corner's, again in the last and decisive match of the season, we emerged House Rugby Champions after a very hard and close series. Ronan, Lamb, George and Sullivan played consistently well and Mantell and Markham had their first taste of Senior House Rugby. These - together with Begg, Brown, Kuptz, Moughton, Wilson, Betts, Byrde, Cracknell, Dawson, McMaster, Moxham and Smith have represented the school at various times throughout the season.

The Junior and Senior House cross-country teams have again retained the championship by winning both events, with Sullivan second home in the senior, and Mantell first of the juniors. Begg, George, Brown, Byrde and McMaster represented the school in the County cross-country race at Holbrook.

On Sports Day, outstanding performances by George, who won both the senior hurdles and the 440 yards, Markham in the junior hurdles, and Moxham, who did exceptionally well to pull the junior relay out of the fire in the last few strides, contributed in a very large measure to our retaining the athletics championship for yet another year. George and Brown represented the school at County Sports at Bungay.

Though not so successful at cricket this season, the House maintained quite a good standard, which was apparent when Byrde scored a brilliant 42 against Johnstons. Lamb, George, Wilson, Byrde and Smith played in the school lst XI, Markham, Mantell, McGown, Treby in the Colts XI, Blake, Brobbel, Weinberg in the Under 14 XI, and Banwell and Goody in the Under 13 XI. All this is very creditable, but we must always bear in mind that physical prowess is but one part of school life. The spirit in which we set about our games is more important than the cups and trophies we may win.

We were all very proud of the successes of Brown, George, Lamb, Kuptz, Moughton and Wilson in the G.C.E. last July. Our hearty congratulations go to Brown, eorge and Lamb, who with Ronan, Kohler, Abrams, Driver and Williams A. L. received prizes on Speech Day.

Six boys left us last term. Betts went to Latymer Upper school; Lamb is an apprentice to the printing trade; Wilson went to the Merchant Navy Sea school, Sharpness, Glos.; Moughton to work in Great Yarmouth; and Johnson and Sullivan to work in London. We all wish them good luck and God-speed.

Throughout the past school year, the outstanding feature of the many house activities has been the admirable lead given by the Seniors, particularly Begg, Davies, George and Lamb. They have done much to foster that friendly and happy unity which has carried the house to considerable success in practically all the inter-house championships.

The house Rugby XV, ably captained by Davies, had a very successful season, and tied with Corner's for the inter-house championship. Despite the loss of the valuable services of Lamb throughout the season, they acquitted themselves well, winning all their matches except the last -a fast and hard fought battle with Comer's.

The cross-country championship was won by excellent team running. In the senior event, Byrde, who finished second, gave an outstanding performance, and altogether eight places were gained in the first twelve.

Splendid performances by the members of the athletics team, particularly Davies, George, Kuptz, Mantell and McGown, and fine team work in the senior relay and tug-of-war contributed in a very large measure to our retaining the athletics championship for another year.

Contrary to all expectations, the house cricket XI was successful in wresting the house championship from Corner's. Consistently high batting and bowling by Byrde and the considerably improved fielding of the team as a whole was largely responsible for this very creditable achievement.

During the winter months of the past two years, the House has enjoyed many delightful evenings through the kind efforts of their friends Mr. N. Collinson, Mr. H. L. Savage, and Mr. K. Williams. We are very grateful to them for their most interesting and instructive talks on colour photography and for showing us their first-class photographic records in colour of their travels in this country and abroad.

Last Autumn term several seniors had the opportunity of delving into the mysteries of campanology. In a short time they had sufficiently mastered the fundamentals of change ringing to include a short demonstration at the Christmas concert. In the Spring term they accepted an invitation to give a demonstration at Langham Oaks School.

In July, Begg and Davies obtained very creditable results in the General Certificate of Education, and together with Lamb, George, Brown, Campbell and Kohler, are to be heartily congratulated on receiving prizes on Speech Day. Grimshaw has been accepted as an Artificer Apprentice in the Royal Navy, and leaves with our best wishes for a successful career.

The House may well congratulate itself on a year of very creditable achievement in many spheres of school life. In the main, this has been due to a considerable change for the better in the general attitude and outlook of most members of the House. Throughout the year there has been a steady and healthy growth of friendly co-operation and team spirit, which in turn has been an inspiration to all.

On Speech Day, the House was very proud to see Begg, Davies and Lamb receive prizes for achievements in their academic work of the past year. Each is to be heartily congratulated on his success.

This year, the House has achieved a most impressive games record in winning the Rugby, Cross-Country, and Athletics Championships in the Inter-House competitions. In Rugby, great credit goes to Lamb as captain and leader of the scrum. His example of keenness and fitness inspired everybody and had much to do with the team's success. Of the backs, Davies was the outstanding success as a scorer, and frequently produced some first-class place kicking.

The winning of the Cross-Country Championship, in which practically every member of the House competed, showed keen enthusiasm and a fine team spirit. Begg, Lamb, George and Brown ran exceptionally well in the Senior Event, and Byrde is to be congratulated on a very fine performance in winning the Junior Event. On Sports Day, Davies, Lamb, Kuptz and Byrde again distinguished themselves.

In cricket the House XI has enjoyed a very successful season, and has showed considerable all-round improvement in bowling, batting and fielding. Dayies, Byrde and Smith have given consistently good service as bowlers. A first-class knock of 39 by Lamb, and a splendid innings of 20 not out by Byrde were outstanding batting displays in the last two matches of the season. Both these two matches, which were against Corners, developed into spirited and exciting battles to decide the championship, which we lost by 10 runs.

Outside the sphere of games, by far the most outstanding achievement was the building of the open-air theatre in the Lower Garden. This entailed very hard physical effort in moving many tons of earth and concrete blocks in the very short time in which the task had to be completed before school play rehearsals could commence. The House may well be proud of this fine effort. The job is by no means perfect, as was only too apparent to all during the full performance of the school play on Speech Day. Much remains to be done still, but that the job was worthwhile should be beyond doubt to everyone. It is within the power of us all to try to do worthwhile things, not only here, but wherever and whenever we can.

All members of the House join in extending to Mr I. G. Evans, hearty congratulations on his appointment as Housemaster of Halls' House, and offer best wishes and sincere thanks to him for his most loyal and invaluable services to the House in the past two years.

July, with its long days of sunshine, brings another term and our first school year to its close. New lessons have been learned, new friendships made, new experiences gained. Warm days with blue skies and refreshing breezes have given us a welcome change from the hard wintry days of last term, and have encouraged us to pursue out-door activities to the full. Archery, sailing, tennis, and even cricket have been new activities for some boys. So at the end of this term, we are all the richer for these new experiences.

In cricket, the House XI showed much promise earlier in the season, but its successes have not been numerous. If only the effort and team spirit which was evident in the last match had been forthcoming earlier. The House has been represented in the School XI by J. Mogford, Cahill, Gillard and D. R. Wood, and in the Junior XI's by T. Dayies, George, Lamb, Moughton, Byrde, Dawson and Smith.

In athletics the House has enjoyed a particularly successful year. Following the excellent performance of the junior team in gaining the Cross Country Championship last term, the winning of the Junior Trophy on Sports Day was the reward of considerable hard work, in the short time available for training. The boys who did most for the House either by dint of natural ability or sheer determination were Davies, who distinguished himself by having two first places, Begg who ran a courageous 880 yards, and Byrde who obtained a first place in the long jump in his first year in the School.

Of the Seniors, A. Lewis and J. Mogford were outstanding in that they showed sustained interest and determination throughout the athletic season. Mogford represented the area at the County Sports. They both represented the school at H.M.S. Ganges and at our school sports they gained one first and three second places respectively. Gillard did well to win two field events and gain third place in the 100 yards.

Congratulations to Murphy on passing the educational and aptitude tests and being accepted as an artificer apprentice in the Royal Navy. Earlier in the term, Preston left for H.M.S. Ganges, where he has already won boxing honours for Collingwood Division. A. Lewis begins his career in the Merchant Navy Service early in September, and all members of the House join in wishing him, and all others who are leaving, success and happiness in their future careers.
